Denomination of Origin Beira Interior
Beira Interior is an area of castles and fortifications whether or not we were “half walls” with Spain. But it is also a Wine Region with the appellation of origin (DO) and geographical indication (IG).
The defense of the region has always been one of the concerns of the people who inhabited it, so there are countless vestiges and monuments of warlike character in the region. Of these, the Centum Cellas tower built by the Romans, probably to store food, stands out, and Almeida, a village defended by fortifications built in the 17th century.
But Beira Interior is also a Wine Region in Portugal, in fact the designation of origin Beira Interior was created on November 2, 1999, as a result of the agglutination of the regions of Castelo Rodrigo, Cova da Beira and Pinhel, which have passed to sub-regions since So.
There is a historical past of wine that dates back to the foundation of Portuguese nationality, it is located in the center of Portugal, has about 16 000 hectares of vineyards and a wide variety of grape varieties.
In this wine region, Syria, Fonte Cal, Malvasia and Arinto stand out in white grapes and, in red grapes, Rufete, Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz.
Since the cultivation of vines in the region is essentially in the areas of Pinhel and Castelo Rodrigo, where the vines contrast with the granite of the castles.
To the south of the region the landscape is dominated by Serra da Estrela, the highest in mainland Portugal.

A differentiated terroir that is characterized by a lot of mountain influence, being a region surrounded by the mountains of Estrela, Marofa and Malcata and by the altitude with variations between 400 and 700 meters, soils with granitic origin in the majority, the rest being essentially of schist origin and a very harsh climate, with negative temperatures in winter and very hot and dry summers.
It results from this characteristic Terroir of the Beira Interior Region White wines of great aromatic exuberance and a lot of freshness and Red wines with complex aromas of wild fruits and spices, combined with a marked freshness.
