The Denomination of Origin Vinho Verde - Vinho Verde is something very Portuguese, a wine region that is really ours.
Is a traditional name that designates wine products originating from grapes from the demarcated region of Vinho Verde, whose quality and uniqueness are a result of the natural conditions of the region, and whose winemaking and production occur within the demarcated region.
This Demarcated Region originally defined on September 18, 1908, the demarcated Vinho Verde Region extends across the northwest of Portugal, in the area traditionally known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho. The Minho River is its northern border, forming part of the border with Spain, its southern border is formed by the Douro River and the Freita, Arada and Montemuro mountains, to the east it's bordered by the mountains of Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira and Marão, and the western border is the Atlantic Ocean. In terms of geographical area, it is the largest Portuguese demarcated region, and one of the largest in Europe.
There are historical records that defend the historical trend that Vinhos Verdes were the first Portuguese wines to be exported to the European markets, this in the 16th and 17th centuries, that the wines of Vale do Minho and Vale do Lima were regularly transported to the Northern Europe in the same boats that brought cod and manufactured products to the south.
Today the Vinho Verde Region, occupying the Northwest of Portugal, is one of the largest and oldest wine regions in the world. It moves thousands of producers, in an economic activity that generates wealth and jobs, contributing solidly to the development of Minho and the country. Here the wines with the appellation of origin Vinho Verde are produced, which are affirmed and valued as unique in the world.
This Portuguese Wine Region, known as the Demarcated Wine Region, was established as the wine region of the Vinho Verde since 1908 and extends throughout the northwest of Portugal, in the area traditionally known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho. Its limits are to the north, the river Minho, which establishes part of the border with Spain, to the south the river Douro and the mountains of Freita, Arada and Montemuro, to the east the mountains of Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira and Marão and to the west the ocean Atlantic. In terms of geographical area, it is the largest Portuguese Demarcated Region, and one of the largest in Europe.
The Demarcated Region of Vinhos Verdes is one of the 14 Portuguese Wine Region that we have to present, and in this case it is divided by sub-regions, namely Monção, Lima, Cávado, Ave, Basto, Sousa, Amarante, Paiva and Baião.
Vinho Verde, produced in the Demarcated Region of Vinhos Verdes, Cradle of the charismatic Alvarinho grape variety, is a tranquil wine that, despite having “peak” at times, has no sparkling gas, although many consumers believe it is a sparkling wine which is not the case, but rather a very distinctive feature of this Portuguese wine region.
Vinho Verde, is indeed one of the originalities in Portuguese Wines, due to its marked acidity, Vinho Verde is unique in the world, and is due to this factor considered a separate and singular category.
It is only in the Vinho Verde Region that Vinho Verde is produced, which is also characterized by being a wine with low alcohol content, it can be red or white, but always light and fresh, fruity, easy to drink, and great as aperitif or in harmony with light and balanced meals: salads, fish, seafood, white meat, tapas, sushi, sashimi and other international meals.
For our customers and followers, the striking typicality and originality of these wines is the result, on the one hand, of the characteristics of the soil, climate, and, on the other hand, of the peculiarities of the region's indigenous grape varieties and the ways of growing the vine. These factors result in a naturally light and fresh wine, different from other wines in the world.
So that there is no confusion for those who buy Portuguese wines, and especially Vinhos Verdes, there is no comparison “green wine and mature wine”.
All wines from the Vinho Verde region are called Verdes, just because they were made in the region and not because the wine is made from green grapes (in the sense that they are not ripe!). Unlike green wines, mature wines do not exist.
There is, as far as is known, no region called the mature wine region.
