The Portucale Motif #31
Portugal – a country with more than 250 grape varieties
The “Queen” season of Wine is over - the Harvests!
Expectations are always high because in recent years there have been many surprises. This year we noticed in all the harvests that we visited, that less quantity is foreseen, but in compensation a lot of quality is expected.
Climate change has been changing the harvest calendar. Each time the harvest is earlier, which required a great adaptation of our wine producers and professionals.
Wine is made up of more than 200 components that are the result, on the one hand, of the constituent elements of the grape and, on the other, the "fruit" of the alcoholic fermentation of its must.
The quality and type of wine depend on the quantity and combination of the various elements: the variety or varieties used in its production, the quality of the harvest and, also, the vinification or stage techniques applied in the transformation of the must into wine, in addition to from the terroir.
In Portugal there are 146 red and 134 white varieties registered.
Each wine produced in our country has its own identity. They vary depending on the region, climate, soil and mainly the grape varieties that are their base.
The flavor of the wine is intrinsically related to the chosen variety.
The choice of variety differs from many criteria. The knowledge combined with the criteria that favour the correct healthy maturation of the plant and the fruit and also the treatment of the vine throughout the year are the main factors.
Finally, we promise to introduce you to each of our wonderful varieties.
