Portugal - a country with over 250 grape varieties

Wine's prime season is over - the grape harvest!

Expectations are always high because in recent years there have been many surprises. This year, we've noticed in all the harvests we've followed that less quantity is expected, but a lot of quality.

Climate change has altered the calendar. The harvest is taking place earlier and earlier, which has required a great deal of adaptation on the part of our wine producers and professionals.

Wine is made up of more than 200 components that are the result, on the one hand, of the constituent elements of the grape and, on the other, the “fruit” of the alcoholic fermentation of its must.

The quality and type of wine depend on the quantity and relationship between the various elements: the grape variety or varieties used to make it, the quality of the harvest and also the vinification or ageing techniques used to transform the must into wine, as well as the terroir.

There are 146 red grape varieties and 134 white grape varieties registered in Portugal.

Each wine produced in Portugal has its own identity. They vary according to the region, climate, soil and, above all, the grape varieties on which they are based.

The taste of the wine is intrinsically related to the grape variety chosen.

The choice of grape variety depends on many criteria, but knowledge, combined with criteria that favor the correct healthy ripening of the plant, consequently of the fruit and also the treatment of the vineyard throughout the year.

Finally, we promise to tell you about each of our wonderful grape varieties.

There are 280 of them... it's going to be a long journey... ready?
