Why Bee Honey?
Why Bee Honey?
Honey is a natural food, the result of the work of bees from the nectar they collect from flowers and after being processed by the digestive enzymes of these insects, it is stored in combs in their hives to serve as food.
Honey has always been used as food by humans, and in fact can be seen as an exceptional food supplement.
Honey has nutritional and therapeutic properties that bring various health benefits.
It is rich in antioxidants that protect the body and heart from ageing, helps lower blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol, contains properties against bacteria, fungi and viruses, fights sore throats and coughs and can also be used as a natural sweetener.
To produce one kilo of honey, bees “visit” around five million flowers. Depending on the time of year and the region, different species are visited.

In Portugal we have a great diversity and richness of honey plant species. They are the source of Portuguese honey and provide the enormous variety of honeys that we have all over the country.
Shrubs, fruit trees and forest species are part of the bees' “menu”, such as rosemary (Lavandula stoechas), heather (Erica umbellata), chestnut (Castanea sativa), rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), arbutus (Arbutus unedo), soagem (Echium plantagineum), pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium), orange (Citrus sinensis), eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp) and sunflower (Helianthu sannuus).
These species give rise to monofloral honeys - such as Rosemary, Heather or Chestnut - or multifloral honeys.
There are therefore more than enough reasons to share a wide range of different types of honey extracted by beekeepers who are passionate about what they do.
Suggested uses for honey:
Natural sweetener for coffee, tea, milk or various pastry recipes. It also goes very well with cheese, nuts, and some salad recipes and meat dishes.
