ALVARINHO

Alvarinho is one of Portugal's most notable white grape varieties. It's a very old, low-production grape variety that is mainly planted in the Monção and Melgaço area (Vinhos Verdes region).

 

It can take two distinct forms: small, slightly compact bunches with small, golden berries or medium-sized bunches with larger berries that remain greenish when ripe.

This variety is responsible for the success of the first Portuguese “monovarietal” wines (a single variety), since blended wines (a mixture of several varieties) are more common in Portugal.

The Alvarinho variety produces very aromatic wines that reach high alcoholic levels while retaining a very balanced acidity.
