The Bairrada Wine Region
The Bairrada Wine Region
A region between the sea and the mountains.
At Made in Portucale, we believe that the Bairrada Wine Region is one of the (14) fourteen Portuguese wine producing regions, full of vitality and history and looking for a place in the future, which we are convinced is a certainty.
In the past, this region was a land of passage and conquest, of struggles between Christians and Arabs at the time of the formation of Portugal, when the capital of the kingdom was Coimbra and the path of affirmation was to the south.
It was also a land of defense for the independence threatened by Napoleon's invading armies, held in the Bussaco mountains
The cultivation of vineyards and the production of wines in this region have, however, calmly watched all these upheavals of the past, because their fruits have always been appreciated.
More recently, Bairrada has been a privileged stage for the transformations that have taken place in Portugal.
It sums up the same social vitality, identical natural potential, a common vocation to discover and dream, all in a smaller size, but just as rich in quality and originality.
Yet only a few manage to penetrate its secrets and enjoy all its enchantment.
Bairrada is a Portuguese wine region located on the Beira Litoral, stretching from the municipalities of Águeda and the important district of Coimbra to the dunes of the Atlantic coast, so it is in fact a wine region located between the sea and the mountains.
The region is classified as DOC, Denominação de Origem Controlada (Controlled Designation of Origin) and stands out for its dense-colored red wines with high tannins, made from the local grape variety called “Baga”, although it is also known for its high-quality white and sparkling wines, which are the result of the diversity of its soils.
Bairrada is bordered to the north by the Lafões region (IPR) and to the east by the Dão region (DOC).
The terroir of the Bairrada region has a mild climate, tempered by the proximity of the Atlantic Ocean, flat land with two types of soil that produce diverse wines: clay, which gave rise to the name Bairrada, and sandy soils.
