Harvest time
Harvest time
It's time for the queen of the wine “world”, the grape harvest.
We can share here that we have an enormous attention and interest in this season, some of us having been involved with this moment of hope, optimism, expectation and hard work since we were children.
As a result of climate change, the harvest season has also been affected. Previously, at least, the end of summer and the beginning of autumn were synonymous with harvests, and in Portugal the harvest season opened around the second half of September and the first half of October, when the grapes were ready to be picked.
Nowadays, and in recent years, we've seen the calendar move backwards, and it's mid-August and in some regions the first harvests begin, first white grapes and then the others.
This year, we already have harvests underway in the Algarve, Alentejo, Madeira and the Azores, and in the next few days, in the other regions of the country, although all the preparations are underway throughout the wine-growing territory, from the Minho to the Algarve, passing through the Douro, Dão, Bairrada, etc.
As always, we're looking forward to and very inspired by what awaits us in this noble season, which we believe is usually auspicious. We'll try to keep an eye out until November and then share it here.
After the Harvest “Festival”, and here in Portugal the tradition is to work hard but with joy, when it comes to the grape harvest, perhaps it's a way of overcoming the arduous effort involved in harvesting the fruit of the vineyards. This is followed by the transformation of the grapes after the harvest.
The processing of the grapes after the harvest takes place in four stages: receiving the grapes, destemming, crushing and finally draining.
In addition to good fruit, it is hoped that each stage of wine production will ensure the good end result that is expected at each time of harvest.
In the meantime, we continue to promote the best of what is made in Portugal, with more news and when the time comes to launch new vintages, we'll toast, toast too.
