The Távora-Varosa Wine Region

The Távora-Varosa Wine Region

The Cistercian monks, the silence ... Wine is also bottled history!

A journey through the centuries - the Távora Varosa region.

The production of sparkling wine in the Távora-Varosa region dates back to the 17th century, 1678, by the Cistercian monks.

This small wine-growing region is on the border between the “Duriense” (Douro) and “Terras do Dão” (Dão Region) regions, where we find the “Terras de Cister” Geographical Indication and the “Távora-Varosa” Designation of Origin. Although it is a small region, it is nevertheless very important for the production of sparkling wines, although it also produces fresh white wines and soft reds, which we would like to share here.

At the start of our project, this was a gap that we noticed, and now we finally have something very special that represents the region particularly well, so that we can share it with our customers.

This interesting region, which lies at the foot of the slopes of the Serra da Nave, between the Paiva and Távora rivers, shows traces of human occupation since protohistoric times and was passed through by the Romans, Suevi and Visigoths, having been chosen by the Cistercian Monks to build some of the most beautiful Cistercian architectural examples there, such as the Monastery of S. João de Tarouca, the first in the Iberian Peninsula, built in the 12th century.

Its unique climatic conditions, with predominantly granitic soils poor in limestone, sometimes schistose with accentuated erosion and acidic, and a dry, temperate continental climate with harsh winters, make this a privileged region for wine production.

As far as white wines are concerned, the natural acidity, intense aroma and citrus character, bright and fresh, make it possible to highlight their quality, but in the same way, red wines take on that delicacy of aroma and nobility of body, achieving excellent flavors over time.

Most of the wine produced in this region is sparkling wine, and it's not just this region in Portugal that produces this type of wine; this is a region of excellence for sparkling wine lovers and connoisseurs.

It's another region to get to know, so we'll have news to share.

For now, our offer from this region is just a click away, just click here, and you'll be able to try it.
