The Denomination of Origin Vinho Verde - Green Wine is something very Portuguese, a wine region that is truly “ours”.
It is a traditional name that designates wine products originating from grapes in the Vinho Verde demarcated region, whose quality and uniqueness are the result of the natural conditions of the region and whose production and vinification takes place within the demarcated region.
Created on September 18, 1908, the Vinho Verde demarcated region stretches across the northwest of Portugal, in the area traditionally known as Entre-Douro-e-Minho. The river Minho is the northern border, forming part of the border with Spain, the southern border is formed by the river Douro and the mountains, to the east it is delimited by the mountains of Peneda, Gerês, Cabreira and Marão, and the western border is the Atlantic Ocean. In terms of geographical area, it is the largest Portuguese demarcated region and one of the largest in Europe.

Today, the Vinho Verde Region, occupying the northwest of Portugal, is one of the largest and oldest wine regions in the world. It involves thousands of producers in an economic activity that generates wealth and employment, making a solid contribution to the development of Minho and the country. This is where wines with the Vinho Verde designation of origin are produced, which are recognized and valued as unique in the world.
The Vinhos Verdes Demarcated Region is one of the 14 Portuguese wine regions that we have to present and, in this case, it is divided into sub-regions, namely Monção, Lima, Cávado, Ave, Basto, Sousa, Amarante, Paiva and Baião.
Vinho Verde, produced in the Vinhos Verdes Demarcated Region, the birthplace of the charismatic Alvarinho grape variety, is a still wine which, despite sometimes having a “peak”, does not have sparkling gas, although many consumers believe that it is a sparkling wine. this is not the case, but rather a very distinct characteristic of this Portuguese wine region.
Vinho Verde is, in fact, one of the originalities of Portuguese wines. Due to its pronounced acidity, Vinho Verde is unique in the world and is therefore considered a singular category.
It is only in the Vinho Verde region that Vinho Verde is produced, which is also characterized by being a wine with a low alcohol content, which can be red or white, but always light and fresh, fruity, easy to drink and an excellent aperitif. or in harmony with light and balanced meals, namely salads, fish, seafood, white meats, tapas, sushi, sashimi and other international meals.
These factors result in a wine that is naturally light and fresh, unlike other wines in the world.
So that there is no confusion for those who buy Portuguese wines, and especially Vinhos Verdes, there is no comparison between “vinho verde and vinho maduro”.
All wines from the Vinho Verde region are called Verdes, only because they were made in the region and not because the wine is made from green grapes (in the sense that they are not ripe!). Unlike mature wines, there is no such thing as vinho verde, but rather there is Vinhos da Região dos Vinhos Verdes.
As far as we know, there is no such thing as a mature wine region.
